Animal agriculture is a significant contributor to human-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Raising animals for food has caused the destruction of 18 million acres of forests annually to provide feed and pastureland. 90% of our forests will be destroyed at the current rate of meat and dairy consumption. Converting feed and water to animal protein is far higher than just eating plants. Over 90% of soy is fed to livestock mainly to feed pigs, poultry and farmed fish. Pesticides and fertilisers used to manage these crops runs off into river systems polluting the ocean leading to dead zones. Poore and Nemecek found that switching to a plant-based diet can reduce food emissions by up to 73%.
Raising animals for food leads to the destruction of habitats and loss of biodiversity as land is converted to either pastureland or fields to provide feed. Producing beef has caused 40% of global deforestation. Of the 70+ billion livestock slaughtered annually, 90% are chickens raised in factory farms and fed soy. Not only does chicken use 50x the amount of water as chickpeas, but manure is polluting our rivers leading to algal blooms and loss of biodiversity. 26,000 species are threatened with extinction. Switching to a plant-based diet requires less land and water, allowing rewilding of former farmland and creating habitats for wildlife.
A high fibre, plant-based diet has been shown to decrease the risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancers. The current pandemic has given us a warning of our future if we continue to eat animals. High-risk swine flu, bird flu, SARS and other viruses have led scientists to predict another pandemic worse than COVID-19. Consumption of low-carbohydrate, high-protein animal products increases the chance of more severe COVID-19 symptoms 3x more than plant-based diets. Good gut health is the key to staying healthy and the best way to increase healthy gut bacteria is to increase your intake of fibre, which is only found in plants.
With a predicted population of 10 billion by 2050, we need to act now to reduce the amount of land and water required to provide our food. The high demand for animal protein has increased land and water requirements because livestock demands more resources. Swapping a meat burger for a plant burger uses 99% less water, 93% less land, produces 93% fewer GHG emissions and 46% less energy (Beyond Meat). Switching to a plant-based diet reduces global agricultural land use from 4 to 1 billion hectares, giving us enough resources to feed a growing population.
Everything we do from driving, to eating and watching TV has a carbon footprint, i.e. releases greenhouse gas (GHG) into the earth’s atmosphere. Carbon dioxide (CO2) from fossil fuels is the most dominant GHG but methane from animal agriculture is 28 times stronger over 100 years and nitrous oxide (N2O) from farming and industrial processes is 265 time stronger but emitted in smaller quantities. The different GHG emissions are expressed as a carbon footprint, or carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), to show equivalent carbon dioxide impact over 100 years. The average person in the UK emits 10 tonnes of CO2e annually whereas in India it’s just 2 tonnes per person. With 68 million people in the UK we need to switch to plant-based diets to mitigate climate change and meet Sustainable Development Goals.
